Suffering is optional."

Damon L. Jacobs, LMFT

My name is Damon L. Jacobs. I am a Licensed Marriage Family Therapist in New York and California and supervising therapist at MHC & MFT of NY. My work in group settings has allowed me to develop comprehensive and effective tools for reducing stress and depression while increasing peace and happiness. I specialize in treating Addictions, Obsessions/Compulsions, Anxiety and Panic, Social Conflict Resolution, Depression, Anger Management, Gender Identity & Transition, Grief and Loss, those newly diagnosed with HIV, and Sexual Identity & Coming Out, all with a sensitivity toward diverse cultural and spiritual backgrounds.  My writing brings these elements together in fresh ways in order to challenge and eliminate harmful "shoulds" in my book Absolutely Should-less. This summer I am starting a support group for individuals in Polyamorous Relationships that will help participants experience more satisfying and fulfilling connections with others.

I started working in the mental health field in 1997 and quickly found that traditional models of psychotherapy failed to meet the complex needs of a diverse society. I realized that culture and politics played significant roles in one's emotional development, and then sought to understand how these factors could be utilized to promote wellness. Inspired by the works of Albert Ellis, Marianne Williamson, and Margaret Cho, I developed ideas of how challenging assumed "shoulds" could assist in promoting mental and spiritual health. After years of applying these ideas to myself and to my clients, I decided to write Absolutely Should-less to benefit others and eliminate suffering.

Born and raised in Culver City, California, I received my B.A in Psychology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and my M.A. in Psychology from New College of California, San Francisco. I moved to New York City in 2005, and currently live in Brooklyn. In addition to my caseload here, I  educate and recruit for HIV Vaccine Clinical Trials through Project Achieve, and also regularly contribute features regarding the social and psychological relevance of soap operas at We Love Soaps.
