April/Anytime Resolutions

I didn’t make any resolutions this year.  Honestly I’ve never had total faith that I’d stick to them, though in the past I’ve made resolutions anyway.  Earlier this year I decided that I wasn’t going to 1) disappoint myself by not sticking to my resolutions and 2) overwhelm myself by having a whole list of things that I want to improve in or achieve in a relatively short amount of time. 

It’s April 19th, almost four months past New Year’s.  You might be wondering, why is Nina talking about resolutions now?  Well, the likelihood is that many of you made resolutions.  And it’s not even a full four months into the year, but many of you probably haven’t been able to stick to them!  Am I right?  No judgment whatsoever – I’ve definitely been there many times. 

That’s why I think it’s a better idea to start with fewer goals.  Maybe one or two at a time, depending on how big or small they are.  The bigger the goal, the fewer I’d try to work on.  The more time and attention we can devote to our goals, the better success we have at achieving them.  Think about it — if we had a whole list of things we wanted to improve or achieve, we’d also need a whole lot of time to devote them.  Given that we all have other things we need to do during the day, it’d be pretty hard to work more than a few resolutions at once.  

It’s important to make sure that your resolutions manageable.  Not only should you start small, but your plan for achieving your goals should also be reasonable.  For example, if you want to run a marathon and you’re new to running, don’t expect that you’ll be able to run five miles after a week of training.  Maybe start the first day by running a mile, then gradually increasing the distance as you get better.  That way, you’ll be able to complete your workouts and you’ll be likely to eventually achieve your goal (and protect yourself from injury!). 

Resolutions are usually made around New Year’s.  Why are we encouraged to work on our goals only in the beginning of the year?  Or make them only in the beginning of the year?  I think it encourages people to put off til later what they need to do now.  There’s no timeline for improvement in your life, nor is there one for achieving your desired goals.  The earlier you begin, the sooner you’ll accomplish! 

So… start now!
