Overcoming the Fear of Rejection

Rejection; even the word can fill someone with fear and despair. As a therapist, I've seen clients make elaborate attempts, both overt and covert, to avoid feelings of rejection. It is natural to seek to ward off feelings of being separate but, too much avoidance can begin to impact our ability to thrive. When you notice you begin curtailing your emotional risks and withdrawing from others because the fear of rejection is too great, perhaps its time to examine what rejection is all about. Learning about the nature of rejection and how to gain from it can significantly decrease our fear of it; learning about your enemy is often the best way to defeat it.
