The Science of Love

There is actually a scientific reason why we sometimes feel high when we are in love.  When we are in the attraction phase with someone, our brains release feel good chemicals and hormones, specifically neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine. These neurotransmitters help to contribute to the feelings of euphoria, rapid pulse, increased energy and a sense of heightened perception. This is a similar chemical reaction comparable to when people use cocaine or other illicit drugs.  

At the beginning stages of a relationship, when lovers seem to be inseparable, the brain releases endorphins and enkephalins, which are natural narcotics, which serve to enhance the person’s sense of well-being and security.  Our bodies release endorphins after a good work-out at the gym so being in love mimics that feeling without having to lift a weight or walk a step.

Interestingly, scientists can’t explain what causes the release of these chemicals or why they diminish. However, they can stipulate that romantic love is an intense physical experience with measurable biological elements. Moreover, some scientists posit that in order to gain further insight, one must turn to the field of psychology as “romantic love is a creation of the unconscious mind.”
