As therapists that work in a cognitive behavioral framework, we find that even slight changes in thinking can begin a positive domino effect for many individuals. This can begin when we zero in on our thoughts and emotions and evaluate their impacts. Ruminators constantly go over the negative aspects of past thoughts and events, over and over, and over and over. It's a great way to reinforce thoughts and beliefs that make you miserable and remain stuck in a poor emotional state (maybe that's anger, depression, or anxiety).
