In another recent victory in the fight against stigmatizing mental illness, First Lady Chirlane McCray, wife of NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio, talks about their daughter Chiara de Blasio's fight with her own mental health concerns. Although Chiara had reportedly been an excellent student and a goal-driven young person, she still suffered from anxiety and depression issues, as well as substance abuse.
McCray noted her surprise that her child could be "struggling with these issues right beneath [their] noses". This can often be the case, however, when children and young people are concerned about what others might think of mental illness. The best we can do is continue fighting for more openness and acceptance of those who struggle with these issues and offer support and guidance.
