Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a mental state where one is active, open, and attentive to the present and is a common practice in both Buddhism and Psychology. It is known to have many positive effects such as improving attention, reducing stress, better emotional regulation, and an improved capacity for both empathy and compassion.

Although many adults may know about mindfulness, students are not necessarily exposed to this form of meditation. A recent article discussed how some students at Arturo A. Schomburg Satellite Academy in NYC are being exposed to mindfulness and its benefits. The students who practiced mindfulness were able to train their attention, quiet their thoughts, and regulate their emotions.

While mindfulness has been incorporated in some corporations such as the Seattle Seahawks, and the U.S. military, perhaps we can incorporate more mindfulness into our daily lives and into our school systems.
