Christopher Gordon, a psychiatrist and associate professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School argues against mandated treatment for individuals experiencing mental health related issues. This topic is a currently a hotbed of controversy given recent events where there is now a growing tendency to stigmatize people with a mental health issue.
Dr. Gordon makes this compelling recommendation for mental health professionals working with an individual who may not believe they need any help. “…if psychiatrists humbly try to understand the person on his or her own terms, do not dismiss the person’s experience as meaningless and truly respect the person’s choices about treatment, sometimes this opens the way to an effective treatment relationship.”
