NYC Therapist Talks: Who Says it Has to be New Years

Are you feeling as if your life has hit a dead end?  Are you feeling stagnant and in need of something new or a change?  Sometimes we get into a funk and need a little boost.

Everyone seems to wait until New Years comes along to jumpstart his or her New Years resolutions.  What if it was time to spice things up a bit in your life and start those resolutions NOW?  With some holidays coming and going, today couldn’t be a better day to start.

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary states that the definition of procrastinate is “to put off intentionally and habitually.”  Many of us keep procrastinating when it comes to resolutions.  We keep adding to our list and telling ourselves that “next year will be the year…”  Well today is the day to actually start on that list and make a change for the better.

Here are a few of the most common resolutions that people have each year:  Start eating healthy, work out more, stop smoking and drinking, stop the late night partying, spend more time with family, stay organized, take up a new hobby, and keep your resolutions!  You may just have one or a few like the ones I just mentioned, but no matter what your resolutions are, as long as you start now you will begin to feel a change in your life.

So what are your resolutions?  Are you going to start today?  Or are you going to wait until New Years and continue to feel stuck?

You may be asking, “but where do I start?”  Well to begin with, stop procrastinating by reading this blog!  Then try to figure out exactly what it is that is in your way and what you want to change.  Many of us may have feelings about change, which is why we often times put it off.  Figure out what kind of feelings you have about your specific goals – Are you scared?  Overwhelmed?  Maybe even have a fear of failure?  Once you reflect on these feelings and understand where they are coming from, it will be easier to move forward.  Next make a list of the top 5 things you want to do.  Don’t create a list that is too long or hard to accomplish.  We want these to be attainable goals.  Making the list too long will only make you feel overwhelmed, perpetuating the action of procrastinating until another time.  Once you have made your list, create an order.  The purpose of having the list is not to have you start with all of your goals at once, but to stay organized and figure out exactly where to begin.  So start with one goal and move on to the next when you feel the time is right.
