NYC Therapist Talks: Trauma and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT)
Trauma is experienced by everyone. But only a few people are able to cope with the direct and indirect effects. Many individuals are misled to believe that because they experienced trauma and were unable to cope and are now seeking help, that something is wrong with them. Trauma generally leaves individuals feeling vulnerable, powerless and helpless. People all over the world deal with trauma related to war stress, disaster, violence, school bullying, accidents and bereavement. Traumatic events are unwanted and can really take a toll on your life. Many times, traumatic experiences are overwhelming and can make you feel like you are in this alone. Though REBT (Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy) counseling, we can work together and learn new techniques to cope with these feelings. Through rational emotive behavior therapy, we can work through the negative emotions and transform them into “healthy” negative emotions (ie- ones that aren't self-defeating). Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, is not a one fits all approach. It is understood that everyone has different backgrounds and different experiences and through REBT, we can begin to explore new coping methods and help you better understand yourself and your experience. You don’t have to live with the emotional burdens of PTSD (Post-traumatic Stress Disorder) and the like. Together we can work on different techniques and help you regain your confidence and rid your life of any blame and shame that can be associated with the trauma.
